This year I’ve been captivated by the biographies from Robert K. Massie, particularly his work on Catherine the Great. He makes it feel as if Catherine is your grandmother telling you these stories herself. For all of the cruelties of powerful autocrats, I have never felt more sympathy for individuals portrayed on a page.
